Chattanooga Data Confirms Direct Link Between Exercise and Anxiety Reduction
Regular movement along local trails and parks delivers measurable drops in anxiety symptoms for city residents.
How we reported this

Surveys released by Hamilton County Health Department on June 15 show Chattanooga adults who exercise at least three times weekly report anxiety scores 28 percent lower than those who do not.
The finding arrives as more residents seek non-medication options amid rising work demands and longer commutes along I-24 and US-27. Local clinics note increased requests for stress management guidance since the start of 2026, with primary-care visits for anxiety-related complaints up 14 percent compared with the same period last year.
Programs Already Operating in North Shore and Southside
Chattanooga Parks and Recreation runs free group walks every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 a.m. from Coolidge Park that draw 40 to 60 participants along the Tennessee Riverwalk. The Chattanooga Track Club hosts Saturday morning runs that start at the Walnut Street Bridge and cover routes through the North Shore neighborhood before looping back through the Southside. Both programs cost nothing to join and require only a pair of comfortable shoes.
A 12-week pilot tracked by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga last year found that 87 adults who attended at least 30 of the 36 scheduled sessions lowered their GAD-7 anxiety scores by an average of 4.2 points. The same report listed average monthly gym membership fees at nearby facilities on Broad Street at $42, well below the national average of $58.
Steps Residents Can Take This Week
Begin with a 20-minute walk on the Riverwalk starting at the Aquarium Plaza entrance, then add one extra day the following week. Track heart rate with any basic fitness watch to stay in the moderate zone between 110 and 130 beats per minute. Residents unsure about intensity levels should speak with a physician at Erlanger or Parkridge before starting.
City health officials plan to expand the free walking groups to include evening sessions on Mondays by September, with registration available through the Parks and Recreation website.
