Chattanooga Schools Launch Mindfulness Programs Across Multiple Campuses
Chattanooga Public Schools and partner organizations now run structured mindfulness sessions for students across multiple campuses.
How we reported this
Chattanooga Public Schools began rolling out daily mindfulness blocks in twelve elementary classrooms last September.
Student anxiety reports rose 22 percent between 2022 and 2025 according to Hamilton County data, pushing administrators to add short breathing and attention exercises before math and reading periods. The shift aligns with national trends but stays tied to local schedules at schools serving the Southside and East Lake neighborhoods.
Named programs on specific campuses
The Mindful Start initiative operates at Normal Park Museum Magnet School on Mississippi Avenue, where third- through fifth-graders complete five-minute guided sessions each morning using recorded prompts from local instructors. A second effort, the Focus Room project, runs at Brainerd High School on Brainerd Road and gives ninth-graders access to a dedicated quiet space equipped with mats and timers during lunch periods. Both programs receive support from the Chattanooga Wellness Collective, which supplies trained facilitators twice a week.
Enrollment records show 1,184 students took part in at least one eight-week cycle during the 2025-2026 school year, with classes capped at twenty participants and offered at no charge to families. The Hamilton County Department of Education reported that participating schools logged a 14 percent drop in office referrals for behavioral issues compared with the prior year.
Next steps for families
Parents can review session calendars on each school website or stop by the Chattanooga Wellness Collective office on Walnut Street to pick up printed schedules before the August term begins. District officials plan to expand the blocks to four additional middle schools on the North Shore by January 2027.
